First came the Great American Smokeout — a day designed to encourage people to quit smoking cigarettes for a day, and eventually for good.

That day isn't promoted as heavily as it was in the past, but public health organizations now have another target — smokeless buy cigarettes use.

“Through with Chew ” will be observed Sunday through Feb. 25. It's an effort to reduce the use of smokeless buy cigarette online products by both adults and teenagers, according to Janet Hill, Area 5 cheap cigarette online prevention coordinator for the Alabama Department of Public Health.

Area 5 includes Etowah, Cherokee, DeKalb, Blount, Shelby and St. Clair counties.

The Great American Spit Out is scheduled for Thursday, when smokeless tobacco users are urged to quit using at least for the day and, if possible, permanently.

Hill said 7.8 percent of adults in Alabama use smokeless tobacco. The Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids says 20.2 percent of male high school students in the state use it.

Hill said the state health department will highlight the harmful effects of smokeless tobacco during Through With Chew Week.

“Smokeless tobacco may not get the same kind of attention that smoking cigarettes cigarettes does, but it's a nasty product that leads to nicotine addiction and causes cancer,” she said.

No specific events are scheduled for the week, Hill said, but she will be contacting schools to ensure they have signs discouraging the use of tobacco products. She also will speak to a class at Coosa Christian School on quitting or avoiding the use of tobacco products.

Gadsden City High School Principal Keith Blackwell said the city board of education has a tobacco-free policy on school grounds and also on athletic fields. He said he's not aware of any smokeless tobacco issues at the school, but students sometimes are caught smoking cigarettes.
